As a result of funding provided by the Madison West Kiwanis Club in memory of two long-time members, Art Peterson and Ernie Rothe, WMLL’s playground area is getting a complete makeover this summer and was open for business on Fall Ball Opening Day.
Art Peterson is a former WMLL Board member and was the key person in securing the current WMLL field lease with WMTV back in 1964. Art and a colleague laid out the current Major and Senior fields and coordinated field construction that year. He also served as Little Lg District 4 Administrator for many years. Upon Art’s passing, his family designated WMLL as one option for memorials. Those funds will also be applied to the playground project.
Ernie Rothe was very supportive of many community youth projects over the years and left a sizable donation to West Kiwanis in his estate. The Kiwanis Club’s Board of Directors was charged with deciding where Ernie’s donation would be applied and chose WMLL’s playground renovation as its first recipient of $20,000. In addition, the Madison West Kiwanis Foundation donated $2500 to the project and is applying for a matching grant from the Wis-Upper Michigan District Kiwanis Foundation. An application for a Kiwanis International $10,000 grant is also in the works and will be submitted this fall. A formal dedication ceremony is planned for Spring 2016 prior to opening day in April.
West Kiwanis is also a current Senior Lg team sponsor at WMLL and has been since the mid-1960’s. WMLL thanks these Kiwanis organizations, as well as the families of Art and Ernie, for their tremendous support.
