  • Join in the fun at WMLL’s Major Field, competing in the exciting contest or cheering on the competitors!
  • WMLL’s Annual Home Run Derby was started in 2011 by former WMLL player, Marco Mascitti.  Marco’s dad, Jason, a former WMLL coach and sponsor, is a double survivor having successfully battled leukemia and lymphoma.

DERBY DETAILS

The Essentials

  • THE CONTEST: Compete in one of six baseball or three softball divisions (see below) to see if you can hit the most home runs before getting 5 outs & be crowned champion!
    • Home Run = A ball hit over the fence in fair territory.
    • Out = Any swing that does not result in a home run.
    • Tiebreaker = If there is a tie in any division, all tied batters will compete in a one swing “swing‐off”, until only one batter remains.
  • FREE SHIRT & HOT DOG: All competitors get a free WMLL Home Run Derby t-shirt & a delicious hot dog! – New Shirt Design for 2019 (see top of page)!
  • ENTRY DONATION: All entry fees will be donated to the Madison Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to fund research for a cure for blood cancers.
    • $10 recommended for Minor, Major Junior, Senior & High School Divisions – Lower Entry Fee for 2019!
    • $20 recommended for Young Adult & Adult Divisions
  • LOCATION: WMLL’s Major Field – see below for fence distance by age division
  • SCHEDULE:
    • Baseball: High School Division @ 1:00 PM, Minor Division @ 1:15 PM, Major Division @ 1:30 PM, Junior Division @ 1:50 PM, Young Adult Division @ 2:05 PM, Adult Division @ 2:20 PM
    • Softball: Minor & Major Division @ 2:35 PM, Junior & Senior Division @ 2:45 PM, Adult Division @ 2:55 PM
    • Trophy Presentation: 3:05 PM
  • PITCHING:
    • Machine Pitch: Machine pitching will be used in all baseball divisions.
    • TBD: The type of pitching to be used in all softball divisions is yet to be determined, but will be either machine or manual pitch.
  • LEGAL BATS: While it is recommended that all participants provide their own bat, it may be possible to borrow a bat at the derby.
    • Metal Alloy Bats: Participants in the Minor, Major & Junior baseball divisions & all softball divisions may use metal alloy bats.
    • Wood Bats: Participants in the High School, Young Adult & Adult baseball divisions must use wood bats.

Baseball Divisions

  • MINOR DIVISION = ages 9 & 10 (as of 8/31/20) – New Division for 2019!
    • fence distance = 115′ CF & 135′ LF/RF (hitting from second base)
  • MAJOR DIVISION = ages 11 & 12 (as of 8/31/20) – New Division for 2019!
    • fence distance = 145′ CF & 155′ LF/RF (hitting from between the mound & second base – 9′ behind the rubber)
  • JUNIOR DIVISION = ages 13 & 14 (as of 8/31/20) & not in high school
    • fence distance = 200′ (hitting from home plate)
  • HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION = ages 15+ & not out of high school (as of 8/31/20)
    • fence distance = 200′ (hitting from home plate)
  • YOUNG ADULT DIVISION = out of high school & <36 (as of 10/13/19)
    • fence distance = 200′ (hitting from home plate)
  • ADULT DIVISION = 36 & older (as of 10/13/19)
    • fence distance = 200′ (hitting from home plate)

Softball Divisions (females only)

  • MINOR & MAJOR DIVISION = ages 9 – 12 (as of 12/31/19) – New Division for 2019!
    • fence distance = 90′ CF & 105′ LF/RF (hitting from outfield grass – 25′ behind 2nd base)
  • JUNIOR & SENIOR DIVISION = ages 13+ & not out of high school (as of 12/31/19)
    • fence distance = 115′ CF & 135′ LF/RF (hitting from second base)
  • ADULT DIVISION = out of high school
    • fence distance = 115′ CF & 135′ LF/RF (hitting from second base)
