Fall Ball FAQ’s — 2017

Who can play fall ball?

Fall Ball is primarily organized to support the needs of the WMLL baseball community. However, fall ball is also open to any other players in the greater Madison and southern Wisconsin area who wish to continue to play ball during the fall season. Those players not living or attending school within the WMLL regular season boundary area (high school attendance area for Madison West, Madison Memorial and Middleton-Cross Plains) are welcome to register and will be placed on teams based on space availability. Each league will have a separate maximum capacity and once that capacity is reached, all later registrants may choose to be placed on a waiting list ($5.00 non-refundable fee to be placed on the official online waiting list).

What fall league would I play in?

FALL BASEBALL age levels are based on your age as of 8/31/18 for most players (see note below).
age levels are based on your age as of 12/31/17.
Reference the league breakdowns by clicking on the Fall Ball Registration/information page.

NOTE:   The BASEBALL ages referenced above are ages as of 8/31/18 … (see EXCEPTION below), which will simulate the league in which players will play in the 2018 spring/summer season.  So, use player age as of 8/31/18 to determine a player’s Little Lg age for 2017 Fall Ball.  Exception: For players born between May 1, 2005 and August 31, 2005, use April 30, 2018 as the age determination date.

What are the 2017 fall ball fees?

Fall baseball and softball fees during early registration period are $150 for WMLL players living or attending school in the West, Memorial, or Middleton-Cross Plains high school districts, and $160 for non-WMLL players. Fees increase to $175 and $185, respectively, after July 4. Challenger fees are $25 for all players and increase to $35 after July 4. Fees cover league administration groundskeeping, home plate umpires, uniforms (hat & socks; sponsors provide jerseys), equipment, and baseballs & softballs for games. See Fall Ball information page for specific registration deadlines.
NOTE for 2017 Fall Ball Season:  fees for this season also include $24 for the player post-game snack program ($2 snack per player per game for 12 games).  Since over 97% of players participate in this pre-paid snack program anyway, this program will make things much easier for our volunteer Team Reps, as they won’t have to collect snack money at the start of the season.

How are Fall Ball teams formed?

Teams are formed by the league coordinators for the fall ball program. Player skill level is assessed based on regular season player evaluations by coaches for WMLL players. Parents of non-WMLL players are asked to fill out a skill level questionnaire and submit with their registration materials. Each league coordinator works with several other coaches and they attempt to balance the teams from a skill level standpoint, while at the same time trying to accommodate each player’s “buddy request” and travel needs for players coming from longer distances.

What is the Fall Ball “Buddy System”?

The Buddy System allows two players to put each other’s name on their registration form as their “buddy” with whom they would like to play on the same team. Players may only select ONE buddy and names must match on both registration forms. WMLL will make every attempt to pair buddies on the same team, but cannot guarantee placement.

When and where are the games?

Almost all games will be at the WMLL complex at 701 Forward Drive in Madison.  Junior Softball games are primarily played Thursday afternoons (WED for Senior Softball) vs other area teams; some of these Jr and Sr games will be at other locations.

Typically, all teams play one weeknight and one weekend day each week, except Challenger Division which plays Saturdays only from Sept 2 – 28.

Who coordinates the fall leagues?

Each fall league has a League Coordinator who will select the coaches, form the teams, distribute uniforms and equipment, maintain standings, etc.
