Fall Ball Information

The 2017 WMLL Fall Ball Season will begin on August 28 and runs for six weeks — plus a week allowing for rainout makeup games — with final games being played no later than October 15. Each team typically plays a weekday and weekend game during that period for a 12-game season (except the Challenger Division for Children with Disabilities; see details further down this page).

Fall Ball is WMLL’s version of Little League’s Training and Development Program (TAD), a slightly less competitive version of summer ball that focuses on providing players an opportunity to improve their skills playing a variety of positions.

2017 Fall Ball Leagues | BASEBALL (girls & boys)

Some Fall Ball leagues are broken down by wider age ranges than regular season leagues. , so your player’s fall ball placement will more closely simulate the league in which they will play during the 2018 regular spring/summer season.  Below are the tentative age brackets for 2017 Fall Ball at WMLL.    Requests for refunds must be made by Aug 1, 2017 for the Fall Ball season.

Fall Rookie Baseball — ages 7-8 (and possibly some younger 9’s); this is a pitching machine league  with 60′ bases
Fall Minor Baseball — ages 9-10; live pitching on standard LL field with 60′ bases
Fall Major Baseball — ages 11-12; live pitching on standard LL field with 60′ bases
Fall Junior Baseball* — ages 13-14; played on full-sized diamond with 90′ bases (NOTE: 14s who will be in high school this fall may register to play up in Senior League)
Fall Senior Baseball — ages 14-17 (14s in high school this fall); played on full-sized diamond with 90′ bases
Challenger Baseball — ages 7-18 (for children with disabilities); played on standard LL field with 60′ bases (scroll down for more info and photos)

NOTE:   Remember that the ages listed above are ages as of 8/31/18 (for players born on or before 8/31/05), which simulates the league in which players will play in the 2018 spring/summer season For players born after 8/31/05,  use player age as of 8/31/18 …… Exception: For players born between May 1, 2005 and August 31, 2005, these players will use their age as of April 30, 2018.

2017 Fall Ball Leagues | SOFTBALL (girls ONLY)

There are three girls fall softball age levels with all games played on standard little league field with 60 ft bases (age as of December 31, 2017, which will simulate the league in which players will play in the 2018 spring/summer season ):

Fall Minor Softball — ages 7-8-9; 60′ bases
Fall Major Softball — ages 10-11-12; 60′ bases
Fall Junior Softball — ages 13-14; 60′ bases

NOTE: Junior Softball will most likely be comprised of one or two traveling teams playing other area leagues (Sunday doubleheaders)

With increasing participation in recent years, we anticipate reaching maximum capacity. We encourage you to register early beginning on Saturday, June 10 (registration is online only on this website). Leagues have limited space and when maximum capacity is reached, a waiting list will be formed.  Cost to be placed on the official waiting list is $5.00 (non-refundable).

Registration fees through July 4 (see note below) are $150 for WMLL players (those living or attending school within the following high school areas: Madison West, Madison Memorial, Middleton-Cross Plains) and $160 for non-WMLL players. Registration fees after July 4 are $175 for WMLL and $185 for non-WMLL players.
NOTE:  the fees for 2017 Fall Ball now include $24 for the post-game player snack program.  Since over 97% of players participate in this program anyway, this program reduces the workload on our volunteer Team Reps by not having to collect team snack money at the start of the season.  The $24 is equal to a $2 snack per game per player for a 12 game season.

Payment options are: credit card, debit card, and eCheck. Scholarships may also be requested through the online system (a $65 minimum fee applies, and WMLL reserves the right to confirm scholarship eligibility with your child’s school principal). This minimum fee includes payment for the player post-game snack program ($24; see note above).  Donations to WMLL may also be made online.

NOTE: Please read and acknowledge the Youth Concussion Information (2011 Wis. Act 172) during the registration process — this is now a state law for all youth sports organizations.

All parents (Challenger Division parents excluded) are expected to volunteer in some capacity or fulfill their obligation through an additional $50 payment (see “Volunteer Opt Out” section of the online registration system for details).  Note: payment of the $50 opt out fee only exempts a parent from working a shift in the concession stand.  It does not exempt the parent from volunteering to do scoreboard or base umpiring.

Volunteer options include: head coach, assistant coach (one per team), team rep (parent rep) or concessions worker (one 2-hour shift per season during a home game … or two split shifts of 1-hour for two games).

Parents from the visiting team will also be asked to operate the scoreboard and parents from both teams will be asked to serve as base umpires (1 base ump from each team).   Scoreboard and umpiring DO NOT count towards the volunteer requirement, but are essential for the fall program to operate smoothly. The volunteer requirement of Fall Ball allows WMLL to hold the program fees in check and we appreciate everyone’s spirit of cooperation.

Note to Prospective Coaches — if you are interested in coaching, please indicate your interest when you register your player using the online registration system. If you do not have a player in Fall Ball but are still interested in coaching, email Fall Ball Registrar, Bob Collins, to let him know you’d like to coach (registrar@wmll.org).

Challenger Division for Children with Disabilities — WMLL is continuing with its Challenger Division of play for our Fall Ball program in 2017. Any disabled child ages 7-18 living in Dane County is eligible to play. The Challenger season begins Sat., Sept 2 and runs for five weeks with Saturday morning games.  Games are played on the WMLL Major Field (the field closest to Forward Drive). Register online. Special fees are set up for Challenger players ($25 if you register by July 4, and $35 after that date). Parent volunteer requirements are waived so parents are able to attend to their child’s needs, as appropriate.

Fall Ball Umpires — If you are interested in being a plate ump for Fall Ball (parents will ump the bases), please review our umpire information page and complete the Umpire Application form. Fall Ball umpires must have gone through training and umpired during the WMLL regular season to be eligible to ump Fall Ball, except if a special Fall Ball “new ump” training session is offered. Former player/umpires (players too old to play Fall Ball) are also eligible.  Check with WMLL Umpire Coordinator Tom Heneghan (umpires@wmll.org) for more information.
